A source familiar with discussions has confirmed that negotiations with Fifa have 'taken a positive turn'.
"At one point we were drifting farther and farther apart, but we are at least in talking terms now," said the source, who did not want to be named.
This is the first piece of positive news after months of deadlock over the bidding for the World Cup TV broadcast rights.
MediaCorp and Today newspaper on Thursday morning reported that football fans would be able to watch all 64 matches of the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa live on television in Singapore. They also said an announcement would be made this week.
But The Straits Times understands that this may not be the case.
'If anything were to be signed, it would still have to be next week,' the source close to the negotiations told The Straits Times.
When contacted, SingTel and StarHub said in a joint statement: 'We do not have the World Cup broadcast rights at this juncture.'
SingTel and StarHub's initial effort, made some time last year, was rejected as being too low. A revised bid made last December was also thrown out.
It is understood that Fifa had initially priced the World Cup broadcast rights at $40 million - more than double the $15 million StarHub paid for the 2006 World Cup.
It recently cut the price, but the exact amount is still unknown although Today newspaper had put the new amount at US$15 million ($21 million).
My thoughts :
Four Months ago , my father would frown whenever he heard the term ' World Cup '. When my family heard about the huge possibility that the World Cup would not be broadcasted in Singapore , we were hugely disappointed .I am sure that every Singaporean football fan would feel that way.
After reading this article , I feel very much relieved. As an football fan , I have now something to look forward to during this June . Imagine sitting on the couch with a bag of potato chips on one hand and watching the opening of the Fifa world cup ....
Watching football is not only a form of leisure , it also helps promote bonding of Singaporeans. As seen from the picture above , we share the same joy whenever the team we support wins . We shrill whenever the team we support lose . We share the same thrills and excitement whenever a striker makes it past the defenders. In a bar where football matches are often broadcasted , the spirit for the sport can be seen when strangers sit together on the same table and stare at one common spot .
To sum it up , I do hope that the deal with FIFA would be closed soon . In this society , we should deserve a reward for our hardwork this past year after the last economic recession that occured.Everyone would be willing to pay money to watch this world-wide event
